Those who know Frontone may have to smile. But of course many people have no idea. Frontone? Where is it? And what does Frontone actually have that is worth mentioning? I'll explain….
Frontone is a modest town in the province of Pesaro-Urbino with only 1200 inhabitants, located at the foot of Monte Acuto and Monte Catria. A tipical Italian town that is dominated by the surrounding mountains and where life is dominated by the surrounding nature. Of course there is the high-altitude Castello di Frontone that attracts many tourists because it is a perfectly restored fortress from which you have a breathtaking view of the Apennines. Not to be missed are the numerous excellent restaurants that are always packed every Sunday. Reservations are a must! In addition to the Castello, Frontone also has a lower part. A bit sleepy collection of houses with no further historical value. A main road, a butcher, two mini supermarkets and a disproportionate roundabout. And yet… Frontone has it. There is a beautiful outdoor pool that I like to visit. Giorgio, the manager, is one of the most good-humored men I know. He always greets me with a cheerful "Buongiorno Dottoressa!". Where he got that from is also a mystery to me. But I have been a loyal customer for years and almost always swim my laps in an empty pool at a very discounted rate. Overlooking the mountains, it is a real pleasure.
But Frontone has more… purely by accident I ended up in the local bar, the Bar dello Sport. Many bars have recently undergone a metamorphosis. They have become completely hip and often have a light and modern interior. But that does not alter the fact that life here does not really change revolutionary. The customers have simply remained the same. Local men who mainly talk about forestry, the timber to be supplied, the mountains and the herds of horses. What a surprise then that they sell the tastiest cakes in the wide area here. As many as six different types of crostata make your mouth water, choosing is not easy. The cappuccino is also top quality here, so a visit to the bar after a swim quickly became a regular routine. The men still look at me as if I'm from another planet, but the girl behind the bar recognizes me immediately.
Now it is September, the swimming pool is closed again and the summer season is over for Giorgio. Too bad, I will have to come up with another reason to eat a piece of crostata in Frontone with decency. Fortunately, there are also countless beautiful walks in the vicinity of Frontone, so it will be fine ...
